Money in Lagos Life

A salary keeps you alive and assets make you rich — but first, know how the money itself works. Lagos Life is free to play, runs on in-game naira that can’t be cashed out, and pays its bills with advertising. Then you climb the money ladder.

Is Lagos Life free?

Yes — Lagos Life is free to play. You can register, create a character, choose a home, travel the map and take part in city life without paying anything. The only things that cost real money are optional naira top-ups — there is no paywall between you and the full game. Play free first, and only spend once you know you want to.

In-game naira

Everything runs on in-game naira (₦) — your home, your items, your jobs, your businesses. The key rule: money you earn in the game stays in the game. The game’s own terms state that naira, items, houses and jobs "have no real-world value and can’t be cashed out, sold or transferred outside the game."

You cannot cash out. Lagos Life’s economy is for playing in, not for arbitrage. Anyone offering to buy or sell Lagos Life naira for real cash is offering something the terms do not allow.

Topping up with real money

You can top up your wallet with real money, which buys in-game naira and nothing else. Payments go through the game’s own payment provider, not a third-party reseller. Two cases where you should ask for help: a payment went through but nothing arrived, or you were charged twice. Otherwise, purchases are final once delivered — spend deliberately.

The money ladder

Each business pays out at 6 PM every evening after running costs. Every rung costs more and pays more — but it also takes longer to earn back.

"Implied daily profit" is the average net profit per payout you’d need to break even in the stated number of payouts (price ÷ payouts). Verified 5 October 2026.

The catch: bigger pays back slower

A Quilox Share (5%) can make up to ₦2.4M on a good day, yet it still needs around 189 payouts to earn back its ₦250M price. Every business also has bad days that lose money, so never buy one with your last kobo. And selling only returns 60% of what you paid.

Golden rule: pay rent and your loan first, then reinvest. A business that bankrupts you is not an asset.

How Lagos Life actually makes money

The game is ad-funded, and it sells two kinds of in-city advertising:

  • Billboards. Slots on the city map, each with a picture and a link, bought by real Nigerian brands — you walk past them as you play.
  • Sea plots. Premium ad space laid out on Lagos Lagoon, positioned on a grid across the water.

Slots are time-limited and free up, which is why the advertisers you see change. This model also explains the growth: an ad-funded game needs lots of players, so it is built to be free and spreadable — exactly how it reached a million players in three days. Expect the map to keep changing, with the Airport and Refinery already labelled "Coming soon".
